How to Keep a Silky Dog Coat Smooth and Tangle-Free

By Tailwisp Editorial TeamUpdated October 17, 20263 min read

Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese, Shih Tzus, Afghan Hounds and many spaniels have fine, silky hair that flows beautifully when well kept. It also tangles at the slightest excuse. A consistent routine makes the difference between a glossy coat and a matted one.

Understanding silky coats

Silky hair is fine, straight or gently waved and slippery. It often has no dense undercoat, so there is little insulation. It grows long and, left alone, can drag on the ground. Fine hair breaks easily, so rough brushing and dry brushing damage it. See identifying your dog's coat type.

Daily brushing

Brushing every day takes five to ten minutes and prevents most problems.

  1. Mist the coat lightly with a detangling spray or diluted conditioner.
  2. Divide the coat into layers, clipping the top layers out of the way.
  3. Brush each layer from the skin outward with a pin brush, starting at the ends and working up.
  4. Follow with a wide-toothed metal comb to check for knots.
  5. Pay attention to behind ears, armpits, belly, tail and feathering.

Tools

  • Pin brush with soft, rounded tips
  • Stainless steel comb with wide and fine teeth. See choosing a grooming comb
  • Detangling spray and leave-in conditioner. See detangling sprays
  • Soft slicker brush for trouble spots

Bathing and conditioning

Bathe long silky coats every one to three weeks. Brush out tangles first. Use a gentle shampoo, follow with conditioner and rinse thoroughly. Pat dry, never rub, which tangles hair. Dry completely with a towel and a low-heat or cool dryer while brushing. Damp coats mat and can cause skin infections. See how to bathe a dog at home and how to dry a dog after a bath.

Trimming

Keep hair trimmed around the eyes, ears, paws, belly and sanitary areas. See hair around the eyes, paw pad hair and sanitary trims. Many pet owners choose a short puppy clip for easy care. See how to give a puppy cut at home.

Topknots and protection

Long-coated show dogs use wrapping, topknots and bows to protect hair. For pets, a simple topknot keeps hair out of the eyes. Use soft, snag-free bands and never pull tightly. Remove and redo daily.

Preventing tangles

  • Brush daily.
  • Keep the coat clean, since dirt encourages matting.
  • Use harnesses that do not rub under the arms.
  • Trim friction zones.
  • Avoid dry brushing.

Mats

Work small tangles out gently with a detangler, fingers and a comb, from the ends. See how to remove mats safely. Large or tight mats are best clipped out by a groomer.

The takeaway

Short daily sessions with the right tools keep a silky coat beautiful. If time is limited, a shorter clip is a good choice.
